Lancaster County First Steps:
Is there anything that increases the anxiety level more than the first day of kindergarten?
Our Countdown to Kindergarten program works to have a smooth transition for the parents, child and teacher. A true win/win situation! The child gets to know their teacher and vice-versa, before school starts! The Countdown to Kindergarten Program is where kindergarten teachers make visits over the summer to the homes of participating students and families. Visits are hour-long sessions whereby children and families are introduced to actual materials used in kindergarten and are given a Kindergarten Transition Toolkit (backpack filled with books, puzzles, clay, blocks, floor mats, etc.) to keep. During an average summer, the program serves an average of 100 children and their families. Thanks to Countdown to Kindergarten, 100 children and their parents are no longer anxious, but excited; about starting kindergarten.
“This program has helped Maria see what she will be learning. She has gotten to get acquainted with her teacher beforehand so she won’t be scared to come to school. She has learned to read a few things. She has become excited about learning new things and just all out ready to learn more and show everyone what she knows.”
